The Corn King

It was a nice hot summer evening at the Garvey house and a majority of the Haley family was coming into town for Ben's wedding. We were all sitting out on the patio while Uncle Mark was working diligently on his grill and setting up his corn cooker.

Needless to say I was in for a treat, as I had no idea this man's passion for corn. When I had asked he began to go into great detail about the way it was grown in New Jersey and how it was always picked that day. Uncle Mark could never have enough corn. He'd buy six dozen ears of corn for just twelve people. But it doesn't stop there... Uncle Mark had to have the perfect consistency of water and butter to make the most delicious pool of "heart attack" fuel any one person could ask for their corn to be dipped in.

All's I know is to this day I haven't had a better ear of corn then I had that evening. Nor a better memory of a guy who loved his corn.

The funny thing about this story is that we had a bout 4 dozen ears of corn that were uncooked and still in the husk from the day before. But to my dad, that was not fresh corn and we had to go buy 6 more dozen.

Mark taught us how to melt butter in hot water in a pitcher-type of a container, and then you just dipped the corn in it, the water would run off and but the butter would stay, thus, a nice buttered ear of corn with minimal effort!

That's great Ryan. I remember that night having corn and I remember Uncle Clem teasing him about the corn. I have another great memory for me about corn. I'm going to post it.

I swear Mark supported a small farm on his own with all of the corn he bought.

I remember that night too. Uncle Mark defended himself by saying his love for corn was nothing next to his father's own love for corn. Pop Pop apparently didn't think the corn fresh unless he went out into the field, husked the cob while it was still on the stalk, then bent it over into a pot of boiling water, and eaten immediately.
