Cape May Coffee

Mark never was fond of the coffee Rita and I would make…much too weak. He said it was like drinking dish water. One summer evening in Cape May he wanted to get a cup of coffee…preferable an espresso. We stopped at a coffee shop (long before Starbucks had made an appearance east of the Mississippi) and to his delight it had one of those huge copper espresso machines. He wanted Rita and I to be as excited as he was and have one with him. We both declined in favor of a “normal” cup of coffee. Well as those of you who know Mark can imagine, he wasn’t put off so easily. After much enticing and explaining the hows and wherefores of coffee brewing we agreed, reluctantly (actually just to shut him up), to a café mocha. He was delighted. He came back a few minutes later with the drinks and sat there grinning from ear to ear looking back and forth from one of us to the other waiting for us to sample them. He knew we would like the coffee, he knew we would have to admit it, he knew he had gotten us to step a foot outside our ever present comfort zone and try something new, something as simple as a cup of flavored coffee. We liked the coffee…

He always encouraged me try something new, learn something new, widen my comfort zone to include a new person, a new place or a new experience. He could encourage this in others because it was how he lived his own life. He is missed.

He used to say I could make decaffeinated coffee with caffeinated coffee beans.

That is funny Rita and I can just hear him saying it.

That's how I'll always remember Uncle Mark, with that enthusism. It's the same as when we went to Smithville that first time and he told us how much better Birch Beer is than Root Beer. We were all skeptical, but we tried it, and we loved it (and he was right, it's better somehow).
