Dishwasher Trout

Chris and I lived in Winslow Township from 1989 until 1994. We became good friends with Mark & Rita and our children also became good friends.

Ever the kidder, that is how I remember Mark. Test this: One night Mark and Rita invite Chris and I over to their home for dinner. We get there, have a glass (or two) of wine, but notice that there is not anything cooking - anywhere. No grill heating up, no stove oven working. Then all of a sudden, we hear a bell, and Mark announces "dinners on, let's eat".

Lo and behold, the only appliance that was working was the "dishwasher". That's when Chris and I have our first "Dishwasher Trout by Vincent Price experience. It was pretty good too!

This was just one of our great get togethers. I'll miss you Mark - Love, Joe & Chris

Were there any side dishes cooking in the dishwasher?

I hope Jen and Jeff are doing well.

I agree! I think maybe the recipe needs to go on the family website even!

I know I've heard of this Dishwasher Trout, but I don't think I ever had it.

Anyone who has a family cookbook will find this recipe, posted by Mark.
But those of you who do not - here goes.....

Trout (cleaned) – one per person
Tinfoil
½ lemon per fish
lemon juice
sliced onions (1/4 per fish)
Fresh green beans
Slivered Almonds
Butter
Salt and Pepper
Peach halves
Brandy - your choice
The amount of the above ingredients is based on your preferences.

Rinse Trout. Place lemon slices in belly with a few pats of butter.
Place onion slices on the outside.
Squeeze lemon over the fish and salt and pepper to taste.
Place fish on tinfoil and wrap up securely. Not tight, just make sure all the edges are sealed.
Clean green beans and clip ends. Place in tinfoil with almonds and a few pats of butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Seal all edges.
Place peach halves on tinfoil and drizzle with brandy. (2 per serving) Seal all edges.
Note – wrap all servings individually.
Place all wrapped items on the top rack of your empty dishwasher. Run the dishwasher on a full cycle including the dry cycle. DO NOT USE SOAP.
Your fish and beans will be nicely steamed. Your peaches will be warm and nicely flavored.
No smelly kitchen and a fun dinner to make.
We first saw this recipe made by the late Vincent Price on the Johnny Carson show in 1975.

I lost a dear friend in April of this year. Since then I've been emailing his mother,Grace, as we try to make new friends and help each other through our loss. In one email she sent me a quirky recipe for making corn on the cob. Reminded of Uncle Mark's love of corn and unusual recipes, I thought of Dishwasher Trout. I shared the recipe with Grace who was intrigued and promised to try it. A week or so later she emailed again saying that someone had brought her a gift--fish. Not just fish--2 beautiful trout! Here's the email she sent after trying the recipe:

We had Uncle Mark's dishwasher trout last evening with the almond greenbeans and peaches. Had to wait all this time to finally get my dishwasher empty and clean!

The fish was excellent...moist and tender. Being Japanese, of course, we dashed a little soy sauce at the table. (we can't imagine fish without lemon juice and soy sauce...go together like p nut butter and grape jelly)

My only boo boo was using the "light" wash cycle (my usual one for just the two of us now) ...should have used the regular. So, the greenbean were too crunchy....Carl thinks the green beans (fresh) make a difference...some are not as fresh as others, etc.

The peaches were ONO! would have been "onoer" if I had the brandy, for sure. Used butter, honey, splenda and cinnamon. Like the beans they were not squishy and mushy as expected....but crunchy and gooood.

So, Christapie...here's my report. Uncle Mark gets an A+!!!!Thanks for sharing.
